  1. To assist in answering our group question on how sleep deprivation affects college students, Dr. Jerome Kravitz, a psychology professor at Howard University was interviewed. Above, Amber has provided the questions and responses gathered from the interview. His expertise helped support the many claims presented in our project. And it gave an air of legitimacy to go along with the research gathered from mainly online sources. With the aid of the online sources and the faculty interview we were able to answer our question as well as present informational facts that every college student needs to know. Through conducting peer interviews it became clear that many students did not realize how important sleep was to maintaining a healthy body and optimizing their educational potential. The average student only receives 4 to 5 hours of sleep per night, but the National Sleep Foundations recommends 8 to 9 hours for college students, and even more for high school students. Many students also think that energy drinks and medications can be used to replace sleep. However, facts and Dr. Kravitz made it clear that nothing can be an alternative for sleep. And when it comes to the sleep cycle, it is extremely important to complete each stage. This allows your body to repair itself and for you to feel refreshed. Naps are also a beneficial way to gain a refresher for those nights when the maximum amount of sleep isn’t achieved. In ending, special thanks goes out to Dr. Kravitz for taking time out of his schedule to satisfy inquisitive minds.
